Check out this youtube on osmosis.  This would actually be cool to try at home (not dangerous, no explosions!).  Thanks to Karen (who will get 2 points extra credit for submitting something I use on the Blog, hint, hint, on Ex. #1).  Comment any ideas about how you might adapt or revise this--what else could you try?  I'm thinking, what would happen if you used colored water?  What do you think?

  1. Placing dye in the water is called Easter egg dying! LOL!

If you were to place an egg into a hypotonic solution (relative to the hypertonic egg) with dye present, then the water would leak into the egg, attempting to dilute the solute concentration present inside the egg. Along with the osmotic inflow of water (into the egg) would come some of the dye. Put that in a frying pan and call it green eggs & ham after you add ham! When the egg is placed in the hypertonic solution + dye, the egg will shrink and dilute the dye in the process, just slightly. Both of the shell's will dye slightly whatever color the dye is.

    Proposed experiment:
Take a bath! Distilled water vs. bath salt water. Distilled water (don't do this) will leave you bloated, weigh yourself before your bath and then after. Bath salts in the water will leave you lighter (shrink you).
